FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a hands-on STEM program for 5th and 6th grade students where students design, build, and code LEGO robots to complete themed missions while researching a real-world problem and proposing an innovative project solution. Guided by Core Values such as discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork, and fun, students grow their skills in problem-solving, creativity, and communication.

Our team competes at district tournaments and celebrates their progress together, making FLL a welcoming place for introducing students to our robotics programs. FLL is the entry point in the progression of robotics programs at `Iolani School.

Innovation Project

The Innovation Project is the research and design part of the Challenge where students identify a relevant real-world problem connected to the season theme, study it, and create an original solution that proposes a solution to the problem.

Through this process, students explore the invention process, practice creativity, teamwork, communication, and real-world problem solving.

Build, Program, Test.

The FLL Challenge mission gives students a fun, hands-on way to solve problems like real engineers. Students work as a team to design, build, and program a LEGO robot using block based coding using the SPIKE app to complete missions, while also learning teamwork, critical thinking, and confidence through research, creativity, and problem-solving.

FLL can have a strong impact on students by building problem-solving, creativity, communication, and teamwork skills while also increasing confidence and interest in STEM subjects. This robotics program can develop habits of learning that support future success in future robotics programs and beyond. Students typically advance to FTC, Drone, and FRC programs.
